Council approves moving voter registration to former magistrate’s office and recreation to former sheriff’s office

Edgefield County Council on May 6, 2025, approved relocating voter registration to 215 Jeter Street (the former magistrate's office) and moving the county recreation and maintenance office into 200 Railroad Street (the former sheriff's office).
County staff told the council the vacant magistrate’s building offers larger workspace, additional storage for voting machines and improved parking and accessibility for voters with limited mobility. Officials said the building would allow workers to take voting machines to voters’ vehicles when needed and help ease overcrowding at the current early-voting site at the Nease Building.
The old sheriff’s office, staff said, would provide the recreation department with a public-facing location for registrations, office space for part-time and full-time recreation staff, and conference space for volunteer sports boards (baseball, softball, football). Staff also said Building and Planning and E-911 share cramped office space and that moving voter registration would free room for expansion and a larger IT storage area.
Councilmember Moody moved to approve the relocations; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Talbot and passed unanimously. Staff had previously approved funds to replace carpeting and paint in the two buildings.
