The Concord Historic Districts Commission approved an application to add a cast-iron plumbing vent stack to the roof of 5–15 Lexington Road.
Joel Bissell presented the application on behalf of property owner Joanna Boynton. Bissell said the work is part of a bathroom upgrade and removal of old cast-iron plumbing inside the building; the new vent stack would consist of one cast-iron pipe approximately 2 inches in diameter and would extend about 30–36 inches above the roof to protect against snow infiltration. Bissell said the stack will be black and that roof flashing (a boot) will be black so it blends with the shingles. He said the new stack would be visible from the cemetery but not from Lexington Road.
Commissioners confirmed code and inspection conversations Bissell had with the plumbing inspector and noted the existing stack in the front of the building would remain. After a brief public-check for comments (none were offered), Commissioner Tim Whitney moved to approve the application; Commissioner Louis Caldarella seconded. A roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval from Tim Whitney, Melinda Shumway, Bill Hewitt, Louis Caldarella and Chair Kate Chartner.
The commission asked the applicant to submit a photograph of the finished installation to staff for the record. Bissell agreed to provide a photo after installation.
