Concord HDC approves front-step railings for 38 Lang Street

The Concord Historic Districts Commission unanimously approved an application to add black galvanized handrails to the front steps at 38 Lang Street.
Applicant Tom Mack, trustee of the 38 Lang Street Realty Trust, told the commission he and his wife want railings installed after he fell on the front steps. Mack described the proposed work as two simple iron rails—one on either side of the entry—that will not extend to the ground and will include a single intermediate post for the top step. He said the rails will be galvanized, painted black and will not include decorative balusters.
Commission members asked no technical questions and raised no objections. Bill Hewitt moved to approve the application as submitted; the commission then took a roll-call vote. Commissioners Louis Caldarella, Melinda Shumway, Bill Hewitt, Tim Whitney and Chair Kate Chartner all voted yes. The motion passed unanimously.
The commission indicated Mack will receive a certificate of appropriateness and may begin work without waiting for the physical certificate, and staff confirmed they will issue the certificate. Mack said he would not expect further follow-up and thanked staff for assistance with the application.
The commission treated the item as a straightforward alteration to a residence in the local historic district and did not attach additional conditions on design beyond the submitted details. No written concerns from the public were recorded during the meeting.
