Henry Janssen, a resident of East McPherson Street, raised traffic and parking safety concerns near Detwiler Park during public comment at the Kirksville City Council meeting. He described regular congestion when Truman is in session and said students parking on both sides of a short street create a hazard for drivers and emergency vehicles.
Janssen suggested two possible measures: striping parking spaces in front of Detwiler Park to signal available parking, and allowing one-side curb parking on McPherson to maintain a clear travel lane while preserving emergency vehicle access. “The biggest thing that scares me is people whipping off of 35 mile per hour Jefferson Street onto this tiny little like bottleneck Florence without realizing that there are going to be parked cars surrounding them,” he said.
A council member advised Janssen to email the public-works director, city engineer and police chief so staff can evaluate the traffic and parking request. City staff indicated engineering and traffic study are the appropriate next steps rather than immediate policy changes from the council.
