The Dickinson City Commission voted May 6 to provide a letter of support to the North Dakota Department of Transportation for a proposal to reduce the Interstate 94 speed limit through Dickinson from 75 miles per hour to 70.
Engineering Director Mr. Sklacek said the DOT request seeks consistency with other communities and noted House Bill 1298's broader speed-limit changes around the state. He described the rationale as both consistency and safety in locations with reduced stopping sight distance or curvature concerns; in Dickinson the measure would maintain a consistent and reasonable limit through the city, Sklacek said.
Commissioner Frederick moved for the letter and Commissioner Bair seconded. The roll-call vote recorded Commissioner Riddle as No; other commissioners voted Aye and the motion carried.
Sklacek said any further speed reductions would be evaluated with DOT based on traffic patterns and sight-distance criteria and that the DOT district engineer has asked for local letters of support to accompany any jurisdictional change requests.
