The Okaloosa County School District on Thursday moved to advertise a public hearing for a revised job description for the director of the Office of Safe Schools, and staff clarified the anticipated fiscal impact.
Doctor Hale and Mr. Smulski told the board that the two job-description items on the agenda are not new positions but updates to align existing roles with state expectations. "722 7 2 3 are both clean up job descriptions on what current employees are doing for our district to prop up the office of safe schools," Mr. Smulski said.
When a board member asked about cost, staff said the revisions are generally no-cost on some listed pages but that one line item shows an annual cost of about $8,000 starting in the 07/24 entry. "Yes. On 07/22 and 02/03, there is no cost on 07/24 is about $8,000 cost for the director position, yes sir," a staff member said.
Board members asked how the cost would be accounted for; staff replied the change would be included in the next budget cycle and is not an immediate payroll action. "Once the budget has been approved, and it will be, not an immediate turnover right now, this is just in anticipation of a future job that will be associated with the future budget," a staff presenter said.
Staff recommended advertising a public hearing for the job description revisions; the board did not adopt the job description at this meeting and no formal vote was recorded on the presentation.
Ending: The board scheduled a public hearing advertisement and staff will return with the item for formal action following the required notice and inclusion in the budget process.
