Board hears multiple facilities projects: cafetorium conversions, roof and security upgrades; members flag budget trade-offs

Doctor Smith and Mr. Myers summarized upcoming work that includes a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for roof replacement and phase 1 renovations at Elliott Pointe Elementary (cafeteria and media center), a Crestview High auto lab remodel, and multiple cafetorium conversions intended to create classroom space and reduce portable classrooms. Mr. Myers said the Edwins Elementary remodel will convert the media center into three classrooms and repurpose the old cafeteria for an additional classroom, creating four classrooms total. "So 4 classrooms," Mr. Myers said when asked for clarification.
Board members signaled an interest in accelerating cafetorium-to-classroom conversions to reduce the district's reliance on portables, but repeatedly raised the question of money. "We're trying to accelerate those a little bit because we have a lot of them now. Sure. So, we're trying to accelerate those, but it comes down to money," one board member said.
Security upgrades were also discussed. A scope modification for phase 2 security at Niceville High School and Baker School includes installing SALTO electronic swipe systems; staff said the plan will eliminate many physical key rings in classrooms and centralize entry control. "Every classroom will now have the SALTO swipe. So all those keys will be eliminated," a project presenter said, adding that smaller rooms and custodial offices will retain keyed locks.
Additional projects on the agenda included a teleforce task order for Crestview High camera replacements and district-wide athletic field services bid amendments. Staff recommended approval of these items as part of the consent and action agendas.
