The committee'''s new rec director circulated a layout and the highway department said it would apply a surface color coat (blue) sourced from a warrant article, but there was disagreement about whether the highway department or volunteers would lay out and paint specific court lines.
Public Works Director Tom Rowan said the highway department had ordered blue surface paint and would apply it when weather allows, but that volunteers who promoted pickleball had previously offered to mark lines with white paint. Rowan said the department purchased two gallons of white paint for volunteers to use to lay out court lines and emphasized the highway staff'''s primary role was surface-coating, not custom line-layout work. The rec committee says there is roughly $5,000 from a prior warrant article for the court; the board was told about $2,200 of blue paint has been purchased and $2,500 may remain.
Select Board members asked recreation and highway department staff to meet and agree on final layout, permanent versus volunteer-applied markings, who will supply labor, and whether additional funding is needed for lights or other permanent changes. One board member said adding permanent pickleball lines and lighting would be a change from what voters approved for a multiuse court and recommended the rec committee return with a cost and funding plan.
The board instructed town staff and the rec director to meet (Tom, Abby and Laurie were named) and report back with a unified plan and firm budget before the highway department proceeds with painting.
