The Coconino County Flood Control District voted to ratify an agreement with Transwestern Pipeline Co. to accept $1,322,248 in reimbursement for flood-protection work finished in the Government Tank corridor, the flood district’s director told the Board of Supervisors on May 6.
Flood Control Director Lucinda Andriani described the work as a multi‑party response to post‑wildfire flooding in a watershed that experienced a 31‑fold increase in peak flows. She said the county worked with Transwestern and with federal partners to design and implement channel-restoration and fan‑restoration measures intended to reduce sediment transport that threatened both downstream neighborhoods and the pipeline right‑of‑way.
Andriani said Transwestern is contributing a portion of the work cost because the mitigation reduces risk to its interstate natural gas pipeline; the county and federal funds cover the remaining work. “This is a win‑win for both parties,” she said, adding that the Forest Service and federal grants covered substantial portions of the watershed restoration.
The board approved the ratification unanimously and authorized a corresponding budget amendment to accept the reimbursement and appropriate the funds to the flood-district project.
