The Borden County Drainage Board received an update May 5 from staff on recent heavy rainfall and stormwater effects, including homeowners reporting groundwater coming up through basement floors rather than through walls.
Board members and staff noted an unusual concentration of rain in April. "We had 8 inches that one day," a stormwater staffer said, and other participants estimated the area may have seen "10, maybe 14 inches of rain in April" when several events are combined.
Residents described basements flooding from groundwater. One attendee asked what to do when water comes up through the floor in an older house; board staff said options are limited. "There's nothing you can do. I mean, it's ground water coming at you. But a perimeter drain around it and then pumps?" a board participant asked; staff responded that pumps were sometimes overwhelmed in extreme events and could not keep up with inflow.
Staff and board members discussed that dewatering for construction may be required at some building sites and that heavy groundwater conditions are persistent in low-lying or artesian areas of the county. The board did not adopt new policy or appropriate funds at the meeting; the item was an informational update and part of the stormwater coordinators report.
Board members encouraged homeowners to document damage and contact county staff for guidance; no immediate county assistance program or funding was announced at the meeting.
