City transportation and engineering staff briefed the council on a wide range of ongoing and upcoming projects, including paving, reconstruction, neighborhood byways, traffic‑calming measures and several pedestrian and bikeway projects. Staff also noted some lane reconfiguration work is postponed due to SB195 and pavement condition concerns.
Highlights and schedule notes provided by staff included: - 201 South (first reported as 20 First South) will receive its first paving of the season on nights between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.; crews will pave the south side from Seventh East to Lincoln Street. - 1300 East reconstruction is ongoing between I‑80 and 2700 South and is anticipated to be complete by fall 2025, with work phased. - 300 North (final phase) is finishing concrete work and stop‑sign islands and will be paved later in the month with an early August completion target. - Capitol Hill traffic‑calming and first zone of the Livable Streets program is complete around 600 North and 200 West; byway projects in Kensington and Poplar Grove are under construction with engagement continuing in other zones. - Planned lane reconfigurations on 201 South and 700 East were postponed due to SB195; the 2100 South resurfacing was postponed because the pavement needs more work than planned. Resurfacing on 700 East and 1700 South is still scheduled for the summer, with 1700 South removing parking on the north side to accommodate a westbound bike lane. Staff said striping will be done to allow future lane reconfiguration but that actual reconfigurations are unlikely this year. - 300 West bikeway construction will begin in June and create a protected bikeway from 900 South to 300 South. Other work includes bus stop improvements in collaboration with UTA and UDOT, and a multiuse trail along 400 South run jointly with UDOT.
Public lands and parks updates included new trailhead amenities, Fairmont Park improvements pending Boys & Girls Club site decisions and three conceptual designs for Sunnyside Park with a public survey open until May 31.
Why it matters: these projects affect traffic patterns, pedestrian and bicycle safety, park access and neighborhood livability; SB195 and pavement condition issues have forced staff to change project timing and the scope of lane changes.
What the council did: the session served as an update; council members asked questions about traffic‑calming design details and project sequencing but did not take formal action.
Ending: staff will post project summaries and engagement results to the city's project feedback page and follow up with neighborhood outreach as projects move into design and construction phases.
