Wausau seeks DNR financing and plans council review of lead service line assistance

Wausau Waterworks staff told the commission May 6 that they have a target schedule to secure financial assistance to replace lead service lines and expect a DNR loan closing in June.
Eric, Director, said the utility "finally have a closing date for lead service line. The actual closing date will be in June, but our target date to bring to council all the financial assistance agreement to get that funding is May 27." Staff added they are also pursuing DNR financing and hoped to secure loan documents in mid-May.
Commissioners were provided with recent federal regulatory context included in meeting materials and staff noted that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is updating rules related to PFAS and the Lead and Copper Rule; those federal changes could affect timelines. No formal action was taken; staff will return to the council on the planned schedule to seek authority to accept financing and implement the lead service line replacement program.
