Wausau utility outlines Washington Street siphon, Clark Island and headworks projects; headworks due by Oct. 2026

Wausau Waterworks staff told the commission May 6 that several wastewater projects are planned, including replacement of a Washington Street siphon that freezes seasonally, extending sewer service to the Clark Island building (previously on a holding tank) and reconstruction of a deteriorated retaining wall at the river outfalls. Staff also said the treatment plant's headworks screening replacement and related building renovations will begin in June and must be completed by October 2026.
Eric, Director, said Washington Street will likely maintain one travel lane during construction with a sidewalk detour and occasional short-duration closures for equipment. Joe, design engineer from Becker Hoppe, said: "Just the one lane and then, sidewalk detour... maybe some short duration closures for getting equipment in and out." The project will also serve the Clark Island building, which has not previously been on sewer and has relied on a holding tank.
On the headworks screening, staff described the work as "a pretty significant project" that will replace screens and renovate the building where large debris is removed at the plant. The project is expected to make maintenance easier but will be disruptive during construction. Staff said the contractor has until October 2026 to complete the headworks project.
No formal action was taken at the meeting beyond filing the Director's Report and discussing project timelines and traffic impacts; staff will continue design and coordination with contractors and return updates as the projects progress.
