Committee discusses merging special-education and educational-programming subcommittees; seeks CPAC input

The Hingham School Committee opened a multi-part discussion May 5 about whether to merge its Special Education subcommittee with the Educational Programming subcommittee.
Committee members said the Special Education subcommittee was originally formed to establish a special-education reserve fund and later became an active venue for parent input. Some members said combining the two subcommittees could reduce duplicated discussions; others cited concerns from CPAC that the special-education-focused forum provides a direct channel for families who rely on it.
Matt Cosman, identified earlier in the meeting as a returning committee member, is the chair of the Special Education subcommittee and supported further discussion. Members agreed not to make an immediate change. Instead, they directed outreach to CPAC for input and suggested including the incoming director of student services in conversations. Several members proposed continuing both subcommittees for the coming year and revisiting the proposal in time to implement any change for the following school year.
The committee asked Matt Cosman to contact CPAC to notify them the committee is exploring options and to solicit feedback. The item will return to the committee after CPAC input and additional staff transition steps.
