Seniors, residents complain after DuPage County posts 'no parking' signs near Prairie Path at Geneva; county says spaces are not designed as parking

Committee members raised constituent complaints about recent "no parking" signs at several locations, including the Prairie Path at Geneva and County Farm, saying seniors who used the spaces contacted them after the signs were posted.

A staff member said the spaces were not designed as parking lots, are not ADA accessible, cannot be plowed with county equipment and had produced complaints about debris and maintenance. The staff member said the county placed signs to indicate the areas were not official parking lots and acknowledged the solution "isn't popular." The staff member told the committee the county’s in‑house engineering team is reviewing a template layout that may be applied at one location and will be tested to see how many of the dozen sites could be retrofitted.

When asked whether vehicles parked there would be ticketed, the staff member said the county is "not an enforcement entity" and would not chase down individuals; law enforcement would have authority to enforce a non‑parking designation if a complaint were received. A committee member noted seniors reported difficulty walking across to an alternate parking area; staff emphasized the sites are not ADA compliant as configured.

Committee members discussed working toward a solution; staff said engineering will evaluate templates and possible reconfiguration, but no formal action or timeline was set during the meeting.
