Waste Connections reports record self-haul April and rising hog-fuel pile

A representative from Waste Connections told the Solid Waste Advisory Commission on May 1 that the company recorded an all-time high for self-haul garbage in April and is managing operational pressures at transfer stations.
"We had a record self haul for garbage in the month of April... This April, we had 14,952 tons," the Waste Connections speaker said, noting an 8% increase over the previous April. The company reported the increase in inbound tonnage and said it anticipates a busy summer for transfer-station traffic; flaggers are being used at sites to manage queues and safety.
The representative said one flagger was struck earlier in the week in an on-site incident and reiterated the need for traffic control at busy facilities. On post-collection materials, he said wood waste or "hog fuel" volumes are growing because regional mills that accept processed wood refuse are limited; Waste Connections currently ships material to one Longview facility and is exploring options, including moving material to composting facilities to reduce on-site pileup. "All of the wood waste that we reclaim... is ground up and shipped off as a heat source for local mills," he said, describing how changes in the paper/power industry have reduced local outlets for hog fuel.
The company also reported it has applied for a permit to install a gas mitigation system on an old C&D landfill behind the CTR transfer site to allow future development of that parcel and said it plans to have the mitigation installed by late summer. Waste Connections said it expects to hire an education/outreach manager by the end of May.
No contract changes or new rates were announced at the meeting.
