Supervisor Kathryn Barger delivered the motion and Supervisor Janice Hahn, the item's sponsor, said the county will expand the current partnership with UCLA by adding two mobile stroke units for a total of three in Los Angeles County. Hahn said the units bring a mobile CT scanner, lab testing and telehealth with a vascular neurologist to patients at the scene, allowing faster diagnosis and treatment.
The board's discussion emphasized prevention and the public education acronym FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time). Hahn and colleagues described stroke as largely preventable through control of blood pressure, healthy diets and stress reduction. They also praised the county's partnerships with first responders and UCLA that have reduced long-term disability for people who arrive at hospitals sooner.
Supporters urged public awareness on signs of stroke and immediate calling of 911, and repeated the board's goal of ultimately having enough mobile units to serve the county 24/7. The board provided no funding action at the meeting; the proclamation is a symbolic and public‑awareness measure.
The measure passed on the consent of the board and does not itself create or appropriate funds.
