Clay County commissioners on May 6 approved a multi‑part justice center plan that will relocate adult felony probation into first‑floor courthouse space and move juvenile probation back into the Family Service Center, with the state providing $150,000 toward a hearing‑room remodel.
Nut graf: The county board, acting on recommendations from the building committee and in coordination with the Department of Corrections (DOC), approved lease and space‑assignment changes, accepted state funding for a courtroom remodeling (to create office and interview space), and authorized a construction manager‑at‑risk contract with Gertz Construction for an estimated $146,079.71 fit‑up project.
Joel, county facilities/building‑committee staff, described a plan to house adult felony probation on the courthouse first floor to streamline the transition from court to probation reporting. He said juvenile probation would move back into Suite 201 at the Family Service Center, a location previously used by juvenile services and already fitted for that purpose. The state will provide $150,000 to remodel Hearing Room 5 to create offices and a private restroom for probation staff.
Dale, a probation official, told the board that co‑locating the felony office closer to the courtroom would reduce delays between sentencing and reporting, help with warrant situations and improve coordination among court, prosecution, defense and law enforcement: “The closer that we get to the courtroom, hopefully that eliminates some of those barriers for us,” he said.
The board authorized termination of the county HRA lease for Suite 201 effective Sept. 29, 2025; juvenile probation will lease Suite 201 beginning Nov. 1, 2025; adult felony probation will lease northeast and south wings of the courthouse first floor beginning Nov. 1, 2025; and the board approved the Gertz Construction proposal of $146,079.71 with Gertz as contractor at risk to arrange subcontractor bids.
Ending: The board approved the space reconfiguration and construction manager agreement; county staff will finalize lease changes, execute the Gertz contract and coordinate the state funding and construction schedule to have occupied space ready later this year.
