The Clay County Board of Commissioners approved a rezoning request on May 6 to change a parcel from Agricultural General to Highway Commercial southeast of Baker, enabling an expanding business to operate beyond a home‑occupation designation.
Nut graf: Planning staff recommended approval after the Planning Commission found positive facts; the board adopted the Planning Commission findings and added a staff‑recommended condition that the rezoning not take effect until the existing residence is removed.
Planning staff member Matt summarized the petition, saying the site is about 1.2 miles south of Highway 52 on the east side of County State Aid Highway 21 and had grown from a home occupation into a business that now employs 31 people and plans an 8,000‑square‑foot building expansion. Matt said the parcel meets highway commercial lot‑size, setback, lot coverage and access standards and that the Barnesville Economic Development Authority supports the request.
Commissioner Morgel noted the local economic benefit and cited the business as a long‑standing employer in Clay County. Commissioners moved to adopt the Planning Commission’s findings and to approve the rezoning; the motion passed unanimously. County staff and the applicant agreed that the rezoning will not become effective until the residence is removed from the property.
Ending: The approved rezoning will allow the business to expand under commercial zoning standards once the residence is removed, and the county will record the condition in the rezoning action.
