Contractor begins covered walkway at Lincoln County High; district reports concession-stand break-ins

Superintendent Barnett told the Lincoln County Board of Education on May 6 that contractor work began on a covered walkway at Lincoln County High School and that construction should take less than two weeks once the posts are set.
"Once they get the holes dug and the post set, the whole process, he thinks they can get it done in less than 2 weeks," Barnett said. The district said the structure will be 70 feet by 10 feet and will shelter students at the rear bus drop-off; the district also extended the adjacent sidewalk by about 40 feet so students can stand under cover.
Barnett said crews started work but had a temporary delay to coordinate with the utility company; he said contractors were scheduled to return on Thursday.
In the same facilities update, Barnett reported another break-in at concession stands. He said thieves have not taken cash but have removed concession items and caused substantial door damage; the district has filed a police report and notified its insurance carrier. "The police report's been filed. It's been reported to our insurance company, so because there was some pretty substantial door damage," Barnett said.
Board members discussed options to reduce future losses, including relocating concession-storage items to a secure area inside the high school, but staff cautioned that moving supplies could complicate youth-league operations that regularly use the concession stands. Barnett said the district is working to upgrade security systems at the site.
Discussion versus decision: the board received a facilities update; no construction contract change or additional funding vote was recorded in open session. Staff reported an insurance claim and said officers have been notified; security upgrades are planned but not yet specified for procurement.
The walkway is intended to keep students out of inclement weather during bus drop-off and to reduce congestion near the front of the school; the concession security work responds to repeated vandalism and theft at athletic facilities.
