Granite School District outlines summer construction, abatement and security upgrades

District facilities staff told the school board on May 6 that security vestibules at three schools will be completed for next school year and a series of summer projects — flooring, ADA seating, abatement, playground replacements and drainage work — are planned or underway; several items are pending bids or board approval.
At a May 6 board meeting, district facilities staff briefed the Granite School District Board on a slate of summer construction, abatement and security projects across district campuses, and said several items remain subject to bidding or board approval.
The district plans new secure vestibules at Brockbank, Valley Crest and the new Cypress campus; staff said those three are under construction and should be open for the next school year. Justin, a district facilities staff member, said the projects will finish this summer and asked board members to raise questions if they had them. Kim Chandler, a board member, asked about material lead times; Justin said staff did not “envision long lead items” and expected the schedule to hold, though the work will require concentrated labor and quick abatement and move-in windows.
Staff listed additional summer work: Cottonwood High School will put its next phase of flooring replacement out to bid for abatement work immediately after school ends; Hunter Junior High’s maintenance/shop conversion is nearly complete; Silver Hills Elementary’s door partition is “99% done”; Hunter’s stadium project includes ADA seating on both visitor and home sides with a contractor from Texas expected to finish by the end of June; courtyard railing installation is the last remaining piece on that project; and playground replacements at Vista, Terrace and Frost are anticipated this summer. Magna Elementary’s STEM conversion was described as being on the approval list for the board to consider that evening.
Staff said Brockbank (referred to variously in the meeting as Brockbank/Broadbank) was rebid after procurement and contracting representatives concluded initial bids did not have adequate representation; bids are due Friday and staff plan to present results to the work-study session in two weeks. District staff also said they have met with Ben Peters and with Tim (both referenced by first name in the meeting) this week about summer furniture orders to support moves and renovations; staff plan to use the Cypress High auxiliary gym as temporary storage for Brockbank materials over the summer.
Abatement work is already underway at Spring Lane to remove asbestos before demolition can begin. Transportation fueling station projects were scheduled to start in early June; the maintenance fueling project was reported at roughly 35% complete. Churchill will receive a roof drainage repair this summer to address ongoing drainage problems, and a Hunter High site drainage packet has been bid and is on the board’s consent agenda for consideration. Staff also said they are studying a detection program (referred to in the meeting as “FAPE detection”) with initial implementation planned at Granger High under contract with Utah Yamas.
Board members and staff emphasized the compressed summer schedule, the heavy labor demands and the need for patience if “bumps” occur during fast turnarounds. Staff said they are coordinating moves, custodial and warehouse teams to stage equipment and supplies and to minimize disruption when school resumes.
Several items described in the briefing were identified as pending actions: Magna Elementary STEM conversion is on the approval list for the evening, the Hunter High drainage packet appears on the consent agenda, and Brockbank bids are due and will be returned for review at the upcoming work-study session. No formal votes or approvals were recorded during the facilities briefing portion of the meeting.
