The HDC voted to approve the removal of a secondary chimney at 5 Baxter Road on May 6, following discussion about the house’s historic fabric and prior alterations.
The homeowner’s representative described the chimney as a later, non-original addition that the homeowner’s insurer had asked them to remove. Commissioners reviewed archival photos showing earlier chimney locations and debated whether the particular chimney was a character-defining feature. Commissioner Angus said he considered the chimney important to the house’s historical character; Commissioner Ray said the principal chimney and other historic elements remain and that removing the secondary chimney is acceptable and may be safer.
Ray told the commission, “I don't think that we necessarily need to keep a second chimney there,” and moved approval. The motion carried with Commissioner Angus recorded as opposed. No additional conditions were attached to the Certificate of Appropriateness.
