Effingham County accepted a hazard‑mitigation grant from the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency at the May 6 meeting to purchase emergency generators, EMA Director Clint Hodges told the board.
Hodges said the original 2018–2019 application intended nine generators at 75% federal cost share, but inflation and equipment‑cost increases mean the award is now likely to cover about 40–45% of costs. Since one originally planned generator site, Hodgkin Lift Station, was upgraded and now has backup power, staff asked to reassign that allocation to the remaining eight locations: two wells, five lift stations and the county EMS headquarters. The agency representative indicated the reallocation was allowable without restarting the lengthy application process, Hodges said.
The board voted to accept the grant and apply funds to the eight generator purchases; the motion carried.
What happens next: staff will proceed with procurement and installation planning for the identified wells, lift stations and EMS headquarters sites and account for the increased local match required by higher equipment costs.
