Steve Guston, the district’s new director of buildings and grounds, introduced himself to the board and reviewed planned summer facilities work and longer-term facility priorities.
Guston said the Bryant tuckpointing project has a kickoff meeting scheduled for May 28 and the district hopes completion will be mid-to-late August. He also described a program of entry-door replacements at several schools and said the buildings and grounds team will assess facilities, focusing on priorities such as an older building’s septic system and expected maintenance needs.
Board members raised questions about the long-term condition of the artificial turf at the district complex. Guston and staff said the turf is still usable for current seasons but will require eventual replacement. They noted an NBC donation was invested to help fund future turf work and said the district has received vendor interest for reconditioning and replacement estimates. Guston said some reconditioning could be done this summer and that staff are preparing a long-range facilities plan for the complex.
Administrators also said they will consider routing a percentage of facility rental fees into a fund to support future maintenance and capital work. Board members asked that staff compile cost estimates, vendor comparisons and an update on the NBC gift and the capital fund before major decisions about replacement.
Guston said he will coordinate with facilities committee members in coming weeks to craft a clear communications plan for the community about projects and the long-range plan.
