During the Oakwood City Council visitor comment period on May 5, resident David Woods (3230 Lakeview Avenue) addressed council for about three minutes, alleging malpractice and civil-rights violations at a hospital in Kettering and stating he is pursuing legal action.
Woods said his lawyers at Kirkland Smith had provided medical records and that he planned to "sue" Kettering [hospital] and others for specified monetary damages. He also said the civil rights commission "is almost done with their investigation" and asked the city to request release of security video footage. Woods told council he wanted evidence sent to local TV stations and the mayor.
Mayor William D. Duncan responded that the visitor-comment period was not the proper venue for pending litigation and that Oakwood had no jurisdiction over events that took place in Kettering; the mayor noted the council could not intervene in litigation. The meeting record shows no council action was taken in response to the visitor's statements.
All quotes in this article are attributed to the speaker who made them during the public comment period. The city advised the commenter that the council could not act on matters outside its jurisdiction and closed the visitor section after Woods' remarks.
