Wichita County proclaims May 2025 National Historic Preservation Month, schedules marker restoration event

Wichita County Commissioners Court on May 6 proclaimed May 2025 as National Historic Preservation Month and heard plans for a public historic‑marker restoration day.
Judge Johnson read the proclamation recognizing the role of historic preservation in protecting buildings, oral histories and artifacts. Karen Montgomery Gonyea, representing local preservation partners, described the county’s restoration project and a public training planned at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Museum of North Texas History.
“It's an opportunity to come to a historic marker restoration demonstration day,” Karen Montgomery Gonyea said. She said the session will include a training led by a Texas Historical Commission marker specialist followed by hands‑on work, weather permitting, on a trio of markers on the courthouse grounds. Gonyea said the event will include a light lunch and is open to the public.
County and preservation representatives said Wichita County has 108 Texas historical markers and identified at least four markers that need substantial renovation; others may need cleaning. Organizers said they have two supply kits available for volunteer groups to sign out and encouraged civic groups to participate.
Officials said the restoration event is part of a broader effort to “harness the power of place” by preserving and promoting local heritage and to provide an accessible volunteer opportunity for families and community groups.
