Administrators presented proposed minor updates Monday to the Washburn High School student handbook for 2025–26, largely updating dates and personnel, and told the board they will study disciplinary hearing and alternative-placement practices over the summer.
District staff said most handbook edits are routine. Board members asked about disciplinary policy, a recurring concern. Administrators said they review disciplinary procedures annually and that conversations are underway between district leaders to explore additional flexibility in long-term hearings and alternative placements so students retain access to quality learning opportunities.
Those discussions will include Superintendent Dr. McWilliams, Doctor Desoto, Jeff Raines and other administrators; staff said they plan to meet this summer to study current procedures and consider practices that expand on-site or online learning options for students subject to long-term hearings. Staff said changes might alter practice rather than handbook language and that any handbook language changes would return to the board for approval.
No vote was taken; the presentation was informational and staff invited board feedback before finalizing handbooks for the upcoming school year.
