Residents urge Lee County to block Costco access off Plantation Road, recommend Metro Parkway entrance

Several residents of Plantation Road and adjacent gated communities asked Lee County commissioners on May 6 to require the proposed Costco development at Colonial Boulevard, Metro Parkway and Plantation Road to place its main and truck entrances on Metro Parkway rather than on Plantation Road.
Fran Patterson, who identified herself as a nearby resident, said Plantation Road is a county‑maintained residential corridor with multi‑family and gated communities and that a large commercial entrance across from those neighborhoods would create conflicts with pedestrians, school activity and existing residents. "We do not think that Plantation ought to add to that. We think that the entrance off of Metro should be used," Patterson said.
Robert Muellick, a resident of Boundary Cove on Plantation Road, called for a signalized Metro Parkway entrance and for truck access to be routed to Metro Parkway because that route is a state road planned for widening and is more suitable for commercial traffic. "The traffic backs up on Plantation Road ... Much greater traffic onto Plantation," Muellick said, noting the planned Costco includes a 12‑pump gasoline station and retail outparcels.
Michael Humphrey, another Plantation resident, cited Lee County's Land Development Code Section 34‑411, which requires that site‑related industrial traffic not travel through predominantly residential areas, and asked the county DOT and commissioners not to approve two entrances onto Plantation Road.
Commissioners and DOT staff did not take a final vote at the meeting; residents were urged to continue engagement with Fort Myers and county transportation staff while the project proceeds through city and county review channels.
