The Dothan City Commission approved an ordinance on May 6 rezoning approximately 22.3 acres southwest of the Mussey Road and Husky Road intersection from H1 (commercial) to AC (agricultural) district. The property is owned by Gavin and Malaney Incorporated; the buyer is identified in the hearing as Dustin Richmond.
At the public hearing, Justin Tomley of PLS Group Surveying, representing the owners and the prospective buyer, said the request is "pretty simple" and that the buyer wants to build a single residence and use the property as a homestead for small-scale agricultural uses. "He is just looking to build 1 residential house on this property and rezone it from commercial 1 to agriculture, AC," Tomley said.
Commissioners moved and seconded the ordinance for immediate consideration and approved it by voice vote. The commission recorded the property size in discussion as approximately 22 acres; the public record at the hearing referenced roughly 22.3 acres.
Clarifying detail: the rezoning changes the official zoning classification from H1 to AC to allow residential and limited agricultural uses; the applicant said the plan is for a single-family homestead.
