The Borger City Council on May 6 issued a proclamation declaring Borger a tourism‑friendly community, aligning the designation with National Travel and Tourism Week and the Texas governor’s tourism initiatives.
Mayor Karen Felker read the proclamation, which cited local investments including expansion of the Dome Civic and Convention Center, support for community events such as Boomtoberfest and Battle of the Bands, a Texas film‑friendly designation and work toward Texas Music Friendly certification.
Deidre, a city staff member, told the council that the tourism designation is “one of the steps required for us to obtain a tourism friendly certification through the Texas governor's office.” She added, “Last year alone, we had over 23,000 visitors to just the Dome Civic And Convention Center,” and said the town’s proximity to Lake Meredith National Recreation Area and its industrial tourism are additional draws.
The proclamation directs continued promotion of arts, cultural heritage and outdoor recreation as part of efforts to attract visitors and economic activity. The council did not take separate binding action beyond the proclamation at the meeting.
