Adam Hartzog, executive director of the Dothan Regional Airport, briefed the city commission on May 6 about recent passenger growth, planned parking improvements and expanding cargo service.
Hartzog said passenger activity has grown about 10% to 12% over the last few months and that engineered plans are under way to expand the airport's paid parking area. He said the airport is considering adding covered parking to improve the customer experience and that work on engineered plan sets is in progress.
On airline relations, Hartzog said airport staff have held talks with Delta Air Lines about summer schedule pricing and that local travelers should check Dothan as an origin for summer flights. He also said the airport has been coordinating with the U.S. Army at Fort Novosel on new branding initiatives within the terminal to improve partnership and support for soldiers training in the area.
Hartzog said the airport's FBO recruited two new tenants (one from California and one from the Carolinas) expected to support civilian helicopter platforms and create an estimated 15 to 25 jobs. He also reported FedEx has increased air cargo presence, expanding from one to two aircraft per night (five nights a week) to four aircraft and larger aircraft, and has leased airport property to support growth.
Hartzog thanked the city for help resolving a water-tap issue needed to support new tenants and said cargo growth is being driven partly by expanding local businesses using air freight. "We have seen airline growth over the last 12 months," Hartzog said. "We're considering investing into covered parking for the paid parking lot to try to offer our customers a little bit better of an experience."
