Moorhead reports mall demolition, DEED grants and continued DG Fuels talks; Goldmark named Makara real estate representative

Derek (staff member) updated the Moorhead Economic Development Authority on multiple redevelopment items: demolition at the Moorhead Center Mall site, use of state DEED redevelopment grants, selection of a new real-estate services contractor for Makara Real Estate Services, and continuing discussions about a DG Fuels sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project.
Derek said everything west of City Hall at the former Moorhead Center Mall site is demolished and that the former United Sugars and Allen Evans Bridal buildings were expected to be demolished within the next two weeks. He credited engineering staff and noted that the city used a DEED redevelopment grant—he referenced a $1,000,000 grant and a second $1,000,000 grant that is being put to work on the site. Derek said the city had representatives at the Minnesota DEED Brownfields conference and met with DEED leadership.
On real-estate representation for Makara, Derek said a selection committee interviewed four firms and recommended Goldmark Commercial; the incumbent Property Resource Group’s contract continues through June, and the city is planning a transition so Goldmark can start in July.
Derek also briefed the EDA on continuing DG Fuels conversations regarding a potential sustainable aviation fuel hub in Moorhead. He said current federal attention is focused on a Louisiana site and that Moorhead’s prospects may move forward in the next federal session; he and Mayor Shelley Carlson planned upcoming meetings in Washington, D.C., and staff planned to meet with DG Fuels and with Greater MSP and the SAF Hub program.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar held a community conversation April 11 at Swing Barrel on federal tariffs’ local impact, Derek said; local businesses such as Swing Barrel raised concerns about aluminum canning costs. No formal EDA actions were taken on these items at the meeting.
