Commissioners proclaim May Bike Month, highlight active‑transport plans and safety outreach

The Board of Commissioners on Tuesday adopted a proclamation declaring May 2025 as Bike Month, May 12–18 as Bike to Work Week and May 16 as Bike to Work Day in Centre County.
Anne Messner of the Centre County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) described local efforts to encourage cycling and educate riders on safety, and she handed a helmet and educational handouts to commissioners. Anne said the MPO has an active transportation plan and long‑range transportation plan that identify opportunities for new facilities; she said the county now has “over 104 miles” of bike infrastructure.
Matthew, a Centre Bike volunteer, described community events such as Cranksgiving — a ride that collects food for area food banks — and other outreach. Commissioners noted a College Avenue project and shared‑use paths planned to connect more routes, and Commissioner Concepcion said the county is pursuing a Safe Streets for All grant but that the application is paused.
Why it matters: officials said cycling improves public health, can reduce parking demand and is a growing part of the county’s transportation mix. Commissioners and MPO staff urged motorists to observe a 4‑foot passing distance for the safety of cyclists.
The proclamation passed by voice vote. Staff and advocates said May activities are posted at centerbike.org and invited the public to participate.
