Select Board unanimously appoints Jeffrey Mayer as full-time Southborough police officer

Chief Newell asked the Select Board to appoint Jeffrey Mayer to a full-time police officer position with the Southborough Police Department. Chief Newell said Mayer is a resident of Northbridge, Mass., currently employed as a full-time officer there, has approximately two years of police experience, previously worked as a dispatcher for Northbridge and Douglas, and holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Anna Maria College. Chief Newell reported Mayer passed background, psychological and physical examinations and had a strong interview with the department.
The board moved and seconded to appoint Mayer to the full-time post. The motion passed by unanimous vote. Chief Newell said Mayer is expected to begin the department's field training program around May 19, and the appointment will bring the department roster to 20 full-time sworn officers with two vacancies remaining for the fiscal year.
The board arranged a small swearing-in ceremony on May 19 and welcomed Mayer at the meeting.
