County staff presented recommendations on May 5 to update non-represented salary ranges for two county positions following a compensation study.
Mary, a county staff member presenting the item, said the proposal would move the jail chief position from range 43 to range 45 and move the deputy director of public works, utilities and waste management from range 44 to range 46. She said the changes reflect final recommendations from last year’s study and additional review.
County officials noted Mason County’s specialized utilities—particularly sewer-management work that requires Department of Ecology certifications—make some county positions unique compared to peer counties. One commissioner said that without the deputy director role the county would likely need to contract engineering firms to manage certain wastewater responsibilities.
Commissioners indicated they were comfortable with the recommended range adjustments, and staff said the items had previously been presented to the county administrator and would move forward in the county’s normal human-resources process. No formal adoption vote or resolution was recorded at the briefing.
