Westfield approves Motorola lease for upgraded 9-1-1 system, adds text-to-911 capability

The Westfield Town Council voted to authorize a lease agreement with Motorola Solutions to replace and upgrade the town's 9-1-1 dispatch system, a project council members said also creates the capability for text-to-911 service in the coming years.
Councilman Dardia moved the resolution and Councilman Armento seconded it. During discussion, Dardia highlighted the upgrades beyond software: “Not only will this give us a pretty significant software upgrade, but this will also allow us to have a state of the art texting of 9 11 system in the coming years,” he said.
The council approved the lease by voice vote. Supporters said the contract will modernize dispatch and improve emergency communications; no dissenting comments were recorded on the motion.
The administration and police department will implement the installation and transition to the new system under terms of the lease agreement approved by the council. Specific contract length and cost terms were discussed earlier in the packet and are recorded in the council's agenda materials.
