Long Branch Mayor Palone and the City Council on Jan. 8 introduced Ordinance 001-25 to authorize the city to acquire two properties—209 Westwood Avenue (Block 198, Lot 1) and 228 Morris Avenue (Block 203, Lot 1)—and to convey them to the New Jersey Transit Corporation once title is obtained to facilitate construction of a pedestrian tunnel at the Long Branch Train Station.
Mayor Palone read the ordinance language at the meeting, describing it as “an ordinance authorizing the purchase of 209 Westwood Avenue, Block 198, Lot 1, And 228 Morris Avenue, Block 203, Lot 1,” and said the conveyance would be made to New Jersey Transit pursuant to a memorandum of understanding between the City of Long Branch and the New Jersey Transit Corporation. He noted the pedestrian tunnel project has been awarded a total of $21,100,000 in federal and state grant funding.
The ordinance was introduced for first reading, advertised and posted according to law, and a public hearing was set for Jan. 22, 2025. A roll-call vote to introduce and advertise the ordinance recorded Councilmembers Dangler, Rassos and Viera as voting yes; Councilmembers Wittes and Vought were recorded absent. The motion passed.
The ordinance, as presented, directs the city to obtain title to the two listed parcels and then convey them to New Jersey Transit to facilitate station improvements described in the city’s memorandum of understanding with the transit agency. The council did not take final action on the ordinance at this meeting; the item will return at the public hearing on Jan. 22, 2025.
Background: Council members said the conveyance is tied to the Long Branch Station pedestrian tunnel project. The mayor’s remarks referenced the memorandum of understanding with New Jersey Transit and the $21.1 million in grant funding; no additional funding or acquisition terms were read into the record at the Jan. 8 meeting.
What’s next: The council will consider public comments and take final action at the scheduled public hearing on Jan. 22, 2025.
