The Marathon County Public Safety Committee on May 6 approved a resolution to transition Sheriff's Office lieutenants onto the county pay scale and employment benefit plan, a policy change the committee said is intended to align supervisory employees with county compensation and support retention and promotion.
County administration told the committee the item implements prior board direction to move certain supervisory positions from an ordinance-based pay arrangement to the county's pay and benefits system. Administrator Lance Leonard said staff had met with lieutenant-level employees and Sheriff's Office management over several months to finalize the policy framework.
The resolution rescinds an outstanding 2024 resolution and describes a transition that will require coordination with HR and payroll systems (time reporting and Workday programming). Committee members said the change was discussed with the goal of avoiding negative impacts on advancement within the Sheriff's Office: lieutenants who qualify could still pursue promotion to captain, for example.
Counsel advised the committee that the item may be forwarded to HR Finance or passed by the committee and then go to the county board; the committee chose to approve it. The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Nick and seconded by Yi; the committee recorded the vote as "Aye" and the motion passed. Administration noted the item will next go to HR Finance.
