Cumberland County approves PreK—6 SEL curriculum pilot expansion (Wayfinder, Satchel Pulse)

Cumberland County Schools voted on May 6 to continue and expand pre-K through eighth-grade social-emotional learning (SEL) programming, endorsing Wayfinder for prekindergarten through fifth grade and Satchel Pulse for sixth through eighth grade and seeking a three-year contract funded with Title IV resources.
District presenters said the programs align to CASEL—s five core competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making), provide tiered MTSS assessments and interventions, and produce teacher-facing assessment tools (Waypoints) to place students in tiered supports. Elementary implementation included daily or short daily lessons (10—20 minutes) and activities; middle schools used a weekly 20-to-25-minute lesson tied to advisory or social studies. District staff described positive educator feedback and local coaching supports and recommended moving to a three-year contract to allow continuity and expanded coaching and in-person middle-school training in year two.
The committee voted to approve the recommendation and directed staff to continue implementation training, maintain assessment cycles (fall and spring), and expand coaching and data-informed MTSS planning at school sites.
