The Cowlitz County Board of Commissioners approved a proclamation observing National Police Week in Cowlitz County and acknowledged a candlelight vigil for fallen officers during their Tuesday meeting.
The proclamation, read during the board’s consent agenda, designates the week of May 11–17, 2025, as National Police Week locally and calls for flags to be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15. The board moved and voted to approve the proclamation during the meeting; the motion carried.
The chaplaincy joined the meeting to highlight the personal sacrifices of law enforcement. Tom Hahn, a chaplain, read a short reflection and led a prayer, saying in part, “Lord, I ask for courage, courage to face and conquer my own fears, courage to take me where others will not go.” He also listed local officers who have died in recent years and named the upcoming candlelight vigil on May 14 at Ari Long Park as part of National Police Week observances.
The proclamation text cited national figures and the names of officers engraved at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Commissioners made no additional policy changes tied to the proclamation; the board’s action was the formal approval of the resolution recognizing National Police Week.
The board also noted the county’s plan to sign the proclamation and deliver copies to local law-enforcement officials and chaplaincy representatives.
