Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson announced Wednesday that the Roswell Police Department’s uniform division has begun holding roll calls at the Roswell Summit Building, the city’s new public safety center, as officers move into the renovated facility while further work continues.
The move, Wilson said at the Roswell Summit on April 30, follows the city’s purchase of the building last year for $8,000,000 and is intended to increase capacity as Roswell’s police force expands. “The police are now moving right here to the Roswell Summit Building, our new public safety center. They’re the first ones to arrive,” Wilson said.
Wilson told summit attendees the city located the public safety center “right smack in the middle where we get the most calls,” and that plans call for firefighters to join police in the building as renovations proceed through the year. “We put our Public Safety Building where we’re going to combine both the police and fire,” he said.
City officials have not provided details in this announcement about specific timelines for the fire department’s move, how the $8,000,000 purchase was financed, or the total renovation cost. Wilson said renovations will continue as more police and fire personnel occupy the building.
The announcement was presented as an administrative update rather than as part of a council vote or public hearing. No motions or votes were recorded in the transcript of the remarks.
The mayor closed his remarks with a brief blessing and a note of welcome to the officers reporting to the building. “As of today, Wednesday, uniform police are now reporting to the Roswell Summit Building, their new good public safety center, your new public safety center,” he said.
