City manager resigns; deputy named acting city manager as part of transition agreement

The Coral Gables City Commission on May 6 accepted the resignation of City Manager Alberto (as cited in the meeting materials) effective May 22, 2025, approved a cooperation, resignation and severance agreement in substantially the form attached to the meeting materials, and named Deputy City Manager Joe L. Gomez as acting city manager effective May 7, 2025.

The city manager read a prepared statement summarizing accomplishments during his tenure and described operational improvements such as modernized project management systems, enhanced financial and budget reporting, an asset review program, improvements at the municipal golf and country club and ongoing restoration work at the Venetian Pool. "Serving this community... has been among the greatest experience of my professional life," he said.

Commissioners thanked the manager for his service and wished him well. Mayor Lago praised his responsiveness and integrity; other commissioners echoed those sentiments during fawning remarks, noting improvements in reporting and operations. The commission unanimously voted to accept the resignation, approve the transition agreement, and install Deputy City Manager Joe L. Gomez as acting city manager to ensure continuity during the transition.

The city attorney was authorized to finalize the cooperation, resignation and severance agreement with any modifications consistent with the commission's intent. The deputy city manager will serve as acting city manager effective May 7, 2025, and transition responsibilities will be handled according to the approved agreement.
