The La Porte Board of Works on May 6 awarded a $250,802 contract funded by the 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for targeted sidewalk replacement in a designated low-income census tract.
Mary Ann Richards presented the recommendation after bids opened in April and said the contract covers replacement of sidewalks in poor condition only — not every sidewalk — including sections of Madison Street between Lincoln Way and First Street, Maple, Harrison and the cross streets between Indiana and Madison. Richards said the work is partly required to provide an ADA-compliant alternate pedestrian route while the Indiana Department of Transportation (NDOT) blocks sidewalks for its Indiana Avenue project; Madison will serve as the alternate path on the west side and Michigan Avenue previously was addressed on the east side.
Richards said tree removal and replacement are part of the project: trees that are beyond their useful life in the project area will be removed and the city will plant two replacement trees for every tree removed; a contracted arborist will develop the planting plan. She also said CDBG funds can only be used in the specified census tract, which limits the geographic scope of work.
Board members asked about the schedule; Richards said tree removal must precede sidewalk replacement and that timing will depend on contractor availability. The board approved the contract on a voice vote.
