Council approves temporary overflow parking lease for Point Mallard site; crosswalk planned

The City Council approved a lease to create overflow parking near Point Mallard Golf Course to support large tournaments, and staff said they will work with engineering to add a crosswalk across Sandlin.
Parks and Recreation staff told the council the lease is intended to provide temporary overflow parking during large events and while construction affects existing lots. Staff estimated parking capacity in discussion — one councilor recalled “50, maybe,” and another said “right at a hundred, hundred and 50.” The project also includes crosswalk planning across Sandlin to connect the overflow lot to tournament venues.
Councilors noted the lot would help address recent parking problems associated with large tournaments that strained neighborhood streets and driveways. A councilor asked whether the gravel parking would be useful longer term if the property later became a dog park; staff said some parking would likely still be needed even with a dog park, and that gravel would make the site usable during wet weather.
The council voted on the lease and approvals by roll call; the meeting record shows councilors voting "Aye" on the motion. Staff said the crosswalk design will be coordinated with engineering if the lease is approved.
