The Parent and Community Outreach Subcommittee discussed May 5 a draft proposal to create a district protocol for community members to request guest speakers at schools.
The draft would have formalized a submission mechanism for community members to propose guest speakers and asked the superintendent to create a protocol that principals could apply consistently across buildings. Supporters said a standardized process would make it easier for principals to vet and schedule speakers and for the public to make requests.
Speakers pushed back on practical issues: several committee members and the superintendent described the district’s existing practice of principal-led scheduling and emphasized that many guest speakers already participate through trusted community organizations. Concerns included how to vet volunteers, whether background checks or referrals would be required, and the risk of politicizing speaker requests if committee members or others used direct email chains to invite presenters.
After discussion the committee voted to table the item for several months to allow the administration to draft a more detailed vetting protocol and to return with options for reference checks, background checks, principal approval workflows and suggested public-request forms.
