The Escanaba City Council on April 17 approved an amendment to the city’s engineering agreement with WSP to cover an anticipated additional $8,200 for coordination and responses tied to a FEMA grant application. Administration said the work is tied to a stormwater project behind the former jail on First Avenue North.
Administration said WSP has been assisting with the FEMA application and that additional staff time may be needed to answer FEMA questions and provide documentation. “We feel we’re right kind of at the finish line as long as we get a couple more responses in,” administration said. Staff told council that if the grant is awarded the city may need to supply additional documents and possibly coordinate with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for permitting.
Officials estimated the FEMA award, if granted, could be in the neighborhood of $3,000,000 for the stormwater work. Council approved the amendment by motion; staff will continue to respond to FEMA and finalize permitting requirements if the grant moves forward.
Ending: If the grant is awarded, further council action will be required to accept funds, approve project design and any required permits.
