Commission elects Commissioner Sackett as Longwood mayor; Shoemaker named deputy mayor

The Longwood City Commission elected Commissioner Sackett as mayor in its annual internal election held in May 2025 and confirmed Commissioner Abby Shoemaker as deputy mayor by the commission’s rotation practice.
Under Charter Section 3.03, the commission selects the mayor from among its members at the first May meeting. Commissioner Sackett was nominated from the floor and then voted on in a roll call; each commissioner recorded an affirmative vote. The commission then recognized the new mayor at the dais and exchanged the gavel.
The election follows the commission’s customary procedure: nominations from the floor, a close of nominations, and a roll-call vote on nominees in the order received. Commission members present who participated in the roll call included Matt McMillan, Abby Shoemaker, Commissioner Boney, Commissioner Morgan and Commissioner Sackett.
No formal objections or alternative nominations were recorded during the meeting. The clerk administered the roll call and announced the outcome. The commission also noted that the deputy mayor position rotates; as a result of the rotation the commission identified Commissioner Abby Shoemaker as deputy mayor.
The commission did not take other formal personnel actions related to the mayoral transition during the meeting.
