Superintendent David Campbell updated the Plymouth School Committee on district events and operations and provided a status report on cooling stations and school nursing recognition at the May 5 meeting.
Campbell said the district's fourth annual health and safety fair drew strong participation from local organizations and families. "We had 40 local organizations, nonprofits," he said, and noted the early-childhood portion, touch-a-truck activities and comfort dogs were well received.
Campbell told the committee the district has been adding cooling stations and air-conditioning units in non-HVAC schools. "We are adding cooling stations at Nathaniel Morton, Cold Spring, Hedge and Manomet," he said, and added that additional AC units are planned for gym and library spaces to provide cooling and dehumidification ahead of warmer weather.
Campbell also recognized Teacher Appreciation Week and noted National School Nurses Day was upcoming on Wednesday.
Adam, a district school business official who attended an Association of School Business Officials webinar, summarized federal funding prospects. "Title I, Title IV, IDEA would be level funded," he said, adding that Title II and McKinney-Vento funding "could see some major changes" and that e-rate funding is under a constitutional challenge before the Supreme Court. He noted the U.S. Department of Education budget proposals under the president's request suggested consolidation and potential cuts to some programs, but said details were not finalized.
Committee members thanked Campbell for the update and acknowledged district staff who organized the fair and work on facilities and health services. No formal committee action resulted from the update.
Ending: The committee moved on to remaining agenda items after the report; the funding outlook will be monitored as federal proposals develop.
