Board approves Mazda dealership signage variance at 1739 East I‑65 Service Road

The Mobile City Board of Adjustment approved a signage variance Monday for a Mazda dealership at 1739 East I‑65 Service Road that will replace older dealership signage with Mazda’s updated brand marks.

Andrew Inger, general manager for the store, told the board the application originally listed four freestanding signs but the applicant will only replace two freestanding signs; two additional signs will be building‑mounted. Inger said Mazda requires the new black‑and‑silver logos for brand consistency. He described one monument sign that currently stands about 25 feet tall and would be replaced with a taller monument sign of approximately 35 feet; the height of that proposed sign is allowed by right but exceeds a previously board‑approved height.

Staff noted the site has a history of variances for dealerships along the service road to accommodate national branding packages. No written public comments were submitted and no speakers registered opposition. A board member moved to approve the request subject to findings of fact; the motion carried.

The board’s action approves replacement of older branded signs with new Mazda‑branded monument and building signs; the record shows the applicant agreed the proposal reduces the application to the two freestanding signs described on the record.
