Weston proclaims April 2025 World Landscape Architecture Month; Arts Council honors student volunteers

Mayor Margaret Brown on April 21 proclaimed April 2025 as World Landscape Architecture Month for the City of Weston, recognizing the contributions of licensed landscape architects to public spaces, stormwater systems, parks and walkable neighborhoods.
Olivia Busey, identified in the meeting as a landscape architect and Broward chair of the American Society of Landscape Architects Florida chapter, told the commission, “Landscape architecture is everywhere. It's everything that you see outside of buildings… If you go to a park, a playground — anything — that is all landscape architecture.” Busey thanked the commission for the proclamation and noted the observance runs through the end of the month.
The Arts Council of Greater Weston presented its 2025 Volunteer Appreciation Certificates to dozens of student volunteers who supported Western WorldFest and other community arts events. Laura Dobransky, introduced as president of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, said the council is “an all volunteer, nonprofit organization founded 20 years ago” and recognized student groups that planned country booths, theme-village activities and a sports activity booth. Dobransky read a list of student volunteers in attendance and said the council relied on “hundreds and hundreds of volunteers” to stage events. The commission and mayor applauded the students.
Mayor Brown also used the meeting to announce multiple upcoming community events and public services, including a household hazardous waste and electronics recycling event on Sunday, April 27 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.) at the Public Works Services Center, 2599 South Post Road; registration deadlines for Broward Sheriff's Office youth leadership “LEAD camp” (open until April 30); BSO Family Autism Day at Cypress Bay High School on May 3 (10 a.m.–noon); a BSO/Weston kickball event on May 16 at Regional Park Field 8 (5:30–7:30 p.m.); Stop the Bleed training on May 20 (7:30–8:30 p.m.) at the Weston Community Center; a hurricane preparedness event on May 27 at the Weston Community Center; and that applications to participate in Weston's July 4 parade are due June 13.
No public commenters spoke during the public-comment portion of the meeting.
The commission then closed the proclamations and announcements portion and moved on to the consent and legislative items later on the agenda.
